Tokyo, first time, no checklist panic

Tokyo is not hard. Trying to do Tokyo in one trip is hard. This plan gives you a home-base neighborhood, one day-trip option, and permission to eat the same ramen shop twice.

Late March or November Suica + walking

Day 1

Land, bathe, sleep

Stay in Asakusa or Ueno if you want quieter nights, Shibuya or Shinjuku if you want the city in your window. Day one is a neighborhood walk, a convenience-store dinner if you are wrecked, and an onsen or sento if you can keep your eyes open. Do not book a show for arrival night.

Day 2

Old east, then the river

Senso-ji early, before the tour groups thicken. Walk to Kappabashi if kitchen streets interest you. Afternoon in Yanaka or along the Sumida. Evening: one izakaya, not a reservation ladder. Learn the train home while you are still kind to yourself.

Day 3

Shibuya without living in the crossing

Do the crossing once, then leave it. Yoyogi Park, Meiji Jingu, and the back streets of Tomigaya or Shimokitazawa will give you better pictures and a better afternoon. Night: a tiny bar or a basement live house. One, not a crawl.

Day 4

A day that is not Tokyo-the-brand

Kamakura for the Buddha and the coast, or teamLab if the group wants a spectacle. Either works. The rule is you pick one excursion and come back for dinner in your own neighborhood. That dinner is usually the message people send.

Day 5

Last morning, one repeat

Go back to the coffee shop or bowl you liked. Buy the snack you kept talking about. Leave for the airport earlier than your pride wants. Tokyo will still be there. The chat will have enough.
